About Alabaster

Knowing Alabaster.

Alabaster mostly sits in the Cahaba and Opossum valleys, divided by Pine Ridge.

It began in the early 1920s as housing for Alabaster Lime Company workers.

The name comes from the company and the mineral. The city incorporated in 1953.

Highway 31, then the main Birmingham to Montgomery road, helped it grow.

Siluria, a cotton-mill village on Buck Creek, merged with Alabaster in 1971.

The mill was built in 1896 and closed in 1979. Its village houses were sold to employees in 1965.

The Municipal Complex now stands on the mill site.

The old water tower and a small nineteenth-century jail remain there.

The Census puts the median home at 1994, and about half were built in the 1990s and 2000s.

About one in five dates from before 1980.

Subdivisions include Grande View Estates, Sterling Gate, Navajo Hills, Wynlake, Park Forest and Saddle Lake Farms.

Eighty-six percent are detached houses.
