Robert Jemison Jr. laid out Mountain Brook in the 1920s on the Shades Valley side of Red Mountain.
The plan called for estate-sized lots on winding roads.
Most of the old trees stayed, and Wikipedia puts the city at 92 percent tree cover.
Mountain Brook incorporated in 1942.
Homes sit in sections like Cherokee Bend, Brookwood Forest, Overton and Crestline.
Shops gather in three villages: English Village, Mountain Brook Village and Crestline Village.
Mountain Brook Village is Tudor-style, begun in the 1920s.
Cherokee Bend was cut from forest in 1963, with about 400 houses in ten years.
The Census puts the median home at 1964, and about one in seven was built before 1940.
Eighty-five percent are detached houses, and many original ones are English Tudor.
Shades Creek runs beside Mountain Brook Parkway, past Jemison Park and the Old Mill.
