About Trussville

Knowing Trussville.

The town is named for Warren Truss, who built a grist mill on the Cahaba River in the early 1820s.

The river is still the city’s symbol.

Trussville incorporated in 1947, folding in old Trussville and a federal housing project, the Cahaba Project.

The Cahaba Project went up in the late 1930s on a former slag-heap site, with 287 homes and duplexes.

It is a National Register historic district.

The boundaries run roughly between Rockridge Avenue, the Cahaba River, Gadsden Highway and Poplar Street.

Chalkville Road still has trees planted in the 1930s and 1940s.

Most of the city is newer.

The Census puts the median home at 1999, 96 percent are detached houses and 92 percent are owner-occupied.

Annexation in the 1980s tripled the city’s land, and the population grew from about 3,500 in 1980 to over 26,000.

Newer subdivisions mean garage, deck and hot tub jobs.
