About Chelsea

Knowing Chelsea.

The area was called Melrose until 1908, when the railroad came through and railroad officials renamed it Chelsea.

The city incorporated on March 1, 1996, with 906 residents. The latest Census estimate is about 16,000.

The town opened a historical museum in City Hall in April 2012.

Homes sit in subdivisions on the city’s own list.

These include Chelsea Park, Chesser Plantation, Foothills, Brynleigh, Chelsea Station and Lime Creek.

Chelsea Park was annexed in 2002, planned for about 1,000 homes on 458 acres along US 280.

Builders were still selling new homes there in 2019. Double Oak Mountain runs northwest of town.

The Census puts the median home at 2007, and about three in four were built in 2000 or later.

Ninety-five percent are detached houses and 90 percent are owner-occupied.

Rezoning requests for 70 more homes were set for the council in June 2026.

Newer houses mean garage, deck, move-out and remodel jobs.
